INTRODUCTION
The internet is changing the world. More and more jobs are moving online. This is not a bad thing, in fact this is creating more opportunity than ever before for the average person to gain financial independence. Now, anyone with a computer and an internet connection can be their own boss and earn an income online. This book is a carefully curated list of resources to get started in the top eight different ways to make money online from the author’s personal experience. Beginning with choosing what type of computer is best for you and where to buy it, each of the eight different ways is then explained in enough detail for someone to get started. By the time you finish this book, you can be making money from home and experience being in control of your own future. It is important to note that this is not a get rich quick scheme, it takes time to be good at anything and $35,000 a year will not come overnight. This book is intended to inform you of the different ways to earn an income online and provide links to resources that will help you.
Going from working for a company and clocking on everyday to being your own boss and self employed requires a shift in mentality. You have to adopt a new way of thinking that puts yourself at the helm of your own life, no one will be there to look over your shoulder and tell you if your doing it right or to get back to work. It requires extreme discipline and you will likely put in many hours without pay while you are figuring things out and getting into your new routine. Once you make the leap, you will experience a new sense of freedom like none you have ever experienced before. You will be able to set your own schedule, pay yourself whenever you want and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that no one can tell you what to do. With your new found freedoms there are also some new responsibilities such as paying taxes on your own as they will not be withheld from your earnings. If you don’t have the discipline to force yourself to work without anyone telling you to, self employment may not be for you.
This book takes the culmination of over a decades worth of experience being self employed on the internet and boils it down into the 8 best ways to earn an income online and how to get started in each. While finding an income that is right for you, it is important to remember to not just find something you are good at, but to find something that you enjoy doing. Keep this in mind when you are considering what to invest your time into, you are far more likely to succeed at something you enjoy!
1. GETTING A COMPUTER
A computer is an investment that will eventually pay for itself many times over (If you already have a reliable computer decent performance specs, skip ahead to chapter 2). The more you invest in your computer, the longer it will last and the more you will be able to get out of it. Deciding on what kind of computer to buy is not a decision that should be taken lightly and requires extensive research. It is a purchase that should be taken lightly. The first decision to make in this process is do you want to build your own computer or purchase a prebuilt? Here are the advantages and disadvantages of the two.
A) Build your own
Building your own computer takes a moderate amount of skill and a basic understanding of how computers work. It can be the less expensive option of the two and can range anywhere from $300 to several thousand dollars depending on how extravagant of a machine you need. It is not too difficult to assemble a pc and can certainly be figured out by someone with no experience if they were willing to put in the time and effort. Some great resources for getting help building a pc are https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/buildmeapc/
You can post your budget and what you are looking to do with your pc and members of the subreddit will recommend a build for you.
Here is a list of parts that is an excellent balance of price and quality. Each of these parts can be ordered from Amazon.com:
i3 6100 processor = $115.98
MSI H110M Pro-VD motherboard = $62.62
EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti = $118.13
HyperX Fury Black 8GB DDR4-2133 memory = $63.79
Kingston Digital 120GB SSD = $50.99
2TB WD Green hard drive = $64.99
EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W power supply = $32.57
DeepCool TX Mid tower = $40.99
Logitech Keyboard & Mouse 920-002565 Desktop Mk120 Wired USB = $21.17
Dell SE2416HX 23.8″ Screen LED-Lit IPS Monitor = $129.99
B) Buy a prebuilt
If all these parts are too intimidating or you simply don’t want to deal with the hassle of assembling your computer, you can buy a prebuilt pc. A prebuilt pc is typically going to cost a little more than building it yourself would but your saving yourself a lot of time, effort and potentially frustration. Another advantage to purchasing a prebuilt is they almost always come with a copy of windows 10 preinstalled and the computer is guaranteed to work when you plug it in. Here are two prebuilt pcs available on Amazon.com, one at the lower price range, and another at the upper end. Which one you’ll want is going to depend greatly on what you will be doing with it, be sure to determine exactly what you will be demanding of your pc prior to purchasing one.

At the lower end is:
‘Dell Inspiron i3650-3111SLV Desktop (Intel Core i3, 6 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD)’
This pc can be found on Amazon.com for $373.00 and is capable of meeting most office demands.
If your willing to invest more money, you can get a computer capable of running high end video editing software and the latest games.
‘Dell XPS8910-23420BLK Desktop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 24GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD) NVIDIA Gaming GPUGTX 960’
This pc can also be found on Amazon.com and costs $1.267.21.
2. FINDING AN INTERNET PROVIDER
All internet providers are not equal, some are offering sub par services with overpriced tags. To do any kind of work online, you will need a decent internet connection. Comcast offers 200mb download, and 20mb upload rates for around $79.99 USD a month. If you already have internet but are unsure if it will meet your demands you can run a free speed test on www.SpeedTest.net.

A) Download speeds
Download speeds are usually more important than upload, unless you are uploading videos to youtube or streaming in which case upload speeds are very important. As a general rule, to generate any type of income online you will need at least 50-100mb download speeds minimum. 200mb download speeds and above are ideal.
B) Upload speeds
Upload speeds of at least 20mb are recommended if you will be doing any type of uploading during your work online. If you are uploading large files such as in the case of videos to youtube, or live streams, you will ideally want at least 50mb upload speeds or above or you could become limited by long upload times or dropped frames in your broadcasts. It is best to negotiate the highest upload speeds you can afford from your internet provider.
Now that you have a computer and internet connection, your almost ready to start earning money online.
3. WHAT ELSE WILL YOU NEED?
Computer? Check. Internet? Check.
What else do you need to get started earning an income online?
A) Signing up
To sign up on any of the websites listed here you will need a valid email address and be at least 18 years old with the exception of those in chapter 8. You can make an email account for free at www.hotmail.com, www.yahoo.com and www.gmail.com to name a few. Keeping this email account secure is of the utmost importance and the best way to do that is to use two-step authentication factor. All of the websites you will sign up on to work on will be managed through this email address so do not forgot your password. Some websites listed here will also require a social security number, it is best to have your social security number readily available.
B) Getting paid
Most websites will require you to have an active bank account or a paypal account. Many banks like Wells Fargo offer free checking accounts and linking them to your worker account is a free service. Some websites use Paypal (www.Paypal.com) to disperse payment and it is free to make an account as well.
4. CROWDWORKER
Crowdwork is at the top of the list because of the variety of tasks it encompasses, there is something for everyone and no experience is needed. Most people are unfamiliar with this word ‘Crowdwork’ so lets start with that. Crowdwork is a term developed to describe the completion of tasks that are too complex for a computer to do on their own but do not quite warrant a specially trained employee. The types of tasks that fall under this category are transcription, writing, data entry, app testing, and even surveys. For example, a company has thousands of printed receipts and they need the data from them copied into a digital form. Websites like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk allow workers to sign on and complete these tasks for payment. You will only need to run web browsers to be a crowdworker so demands on your computer will not be very high and no additional software is required.
A) Amazon’s Mechanical Turk
Amazon runs a website called Mechanical Turk (www.mturk.com) and the companies that post work are called ‘requesters’ and the jobs themselves are called ‘hits’ or ‘human intelligence tasks’. So let’s say a requester has a batch of 10,000 receipts hits they need to be copied and they pay 5 cents a piece. As a worker on Mechanical Turk you can sign on and complete as many of these hits as you want, whenever you want. Beware, poor quality work can be rejected and you may not be paid but there are extensions that allow users to review certain requesters and allow you to avoid those requestors with poor reputations. One website that offers a browser extension to give requesters ratings is http://www.turkopticon.com. Here you can see what other workers have to say about a particular requester and leave reviews of your own. You will need a social security number to sign up, and a valid bank account to transfer your money to. There are also resources such as www.Mturkforum.com that post helpful guides for streamlining your workflow and increasing your daily haul. Other websites with crowdwork include www.crowdflower.com, www.clickworker.com. There are hundreds of thousands of tasks ranging from transcription to app testing and surveys, if you have some dedication and discipline it is very possible to make $100 a day or more.

B) Prolific
Prolific (www.prolific.ac) is a simplified version of mechanical turk, here the focus is on completing academic surveys only. Signing up is a much easier process on Prolific and you are able to withdraw your earnings to a paypal account. The drawback is far less work is available than on Mechanical Turk and it takes slightly longer to withdraw the money you make. Paypal will also charge a small percentage to withdraw your money from Prolific.

C) Crowdflower
Similar to Mturk, Crowdflower (www.crowdflower.com) allows workers to sign up and complete skill tests. The higher you perform on the skill tests the more work you will have access to. Although it is not as popular as other crowdworker websites it can still be useful to supplement your income. It is ideal to have accounts on as many crowdworker sites as possible to give yourself a larger pool of work to choose from. That way you can choose the highest paying or easiest tasks so even if you plan on spending most of your time on Mturk, it is still a good idea to monitor crowdflower for high paying opportunities.

5. FREELANCE ARTIST
Freelance artist is probably one of the most fun online careers but its also one of the most saturated markets. It is important to stand out from the crowd with a unique style that is recognizable. It is probably one of the more talent based jobs and it will be difficult to achieve success without formal training but that is not to say it is impossible. The two most prominent areas are graphic design and web design. Here are some tips and resources for getting started in both.
A) Graphic Design
Do you have a passion for drawing, painting, or digital art? Capitalize on your talent by designing graphics and logos using software like Adobe Photoshop or 3d Studio Max. Subscriptions to these programs cost about $20 a month and there are thousands of tutorials available for free on youtube to help you learn them. Websites like www.99designs.com and www.TurboSquid.com allow you to upload and sell your graphics and 3D designs. 99designs provides a marketplace for clients to meet with designers and commission art for anything from business cards to t shirts. TurboSquid is an online store where 3D modelers can upload their designs and sell them at their chosen price.

B) Web Design
20 years ago web design was a very difficult task that required extensive knowledge of programming languages like HTML. Now, anyone can design a professional quality website in minutes, but many people who need one are not willing to design it themselves. There is a huge demand for websites today and taking advantage of modern tools to provide high quality web design at very low cost is a bustling market. One of the best tools for designing a website is www.Wix.com. Wix offers a powerful editing tool and a wide variety of templates to start from. You can create a website for free, only paying when you link it to a domain. Take advantage of Wix’s powerful free editor to create a portfolio of web designs and offer to create a website at a fraction of the cost large companies would charge.

C) Fiverr
Fiverr is a fantastic website for graphic designers and web designers alike. It allows artists to advertise their services starting at $5. Do you have a niche or speciality? Perhaps you are very good at designing modern looking business cards, www.Fiverr.com is a great place to advertise your services and receive payment all in one place. Also, Fiverr is not limited to graphic and web design, there are video, music, programming, business and lifestyle categories for workers as well. Branch out into multiple disciplines to expand your job catching web.

6. ONLINE STORES
Building an online store is one of the most common ways people earn a living online. There are many ways to go about doing this. The simplest way to get started is by finding things lying around your house you no longer want but may still hold value. You can list these items for sale on websites like Amazon and Ebay and get a return on what would have otherwise just sat around.
A) Amazon
Amazon is the world’s leading online reseller website. Here at www.Amazon.com you can create an account, take photos of items you want to sell and upload those photos for people to buy. You get to set the price and the best way to do this is to search Amazon for similar items and list them for a slightly lower price. It takes time to build up a good reputation as an online seller and each sale you have is an opportunity to increase your seller rating and maybe even get the customer to leave a review. Sellers will earn ratings and higher ratings will increase your success. Once you have sold any unwanted items from around the house, you can start thinking about expanding your store and finding a source for inventory. Many people have had success with browsing local thrift shops for hidden treasures, paying a very small sum and then reselling them for many times the price they paid. Other options for inventory include clothing, collectibles, video games, items ordered in bulk directly from manufacturers and handcrafted items. Many large companies such as Samsung and Dell operate their own stores on Amazon so the competition is very high. There are many success stories and guides for starting an Amazon store available on Youtube for free. One huge selling point worth noting is Amazon offers the option to store and ship your goods for you, eliminating the need for you to hand mail items which can prove extremely valuable when your store begins to grow in size. Amazon charges a flat rate of $0.99 cents per item sold and also offers a $39.99 a month subscription for sellers in place of the flat rate.

B) eBay
Another very popular website with easy entry for new sellers is eBay (www.eBay.com). EBay works much in the same way as Amazon allowing users to create their own virtual store where they can upload anything they would like to sell. The most notable difference between eBay and Amazon is the selling method. EBay offers the option for sellers to hold ‘auctions’ for the items they are selling and potential buyers can them ‘bid’ on how much they are willing to pay. Whoever has the highest bid at the end of the auction will have the option to purchase the product for the price they bid. EBay operates with a very similar rating system to Amazon and each sale can contribute to increasing or decreasing a sellers reputation. The cost to sell on eBay is %8 of the final sale price for items costing between $0.99-$50.00, and for items selling for $50.01-$1,000.00 the cost is %8 of the initial $50.00 plus %5 of the remaining final sale price.

C) Etsy
Etsy (www.Etsy.com) is an online marketplace focusing on handcrafted goods such as bracelets, beads, necklaces, pottery and many more. Use Etsy for bringing any type of handcrafted products to the market. This option could be for you if you have the artistic ability and means to create unique products. It operates similar to Amazon where the seller sets the price and in return the website takes a small percentage of the final sale price. To list an item on Etsy costs $0.20 and once an item sells Etsy will take a %3.5 transaction fee on the final sale price.

D) Deviant Art
DeviantArt (www.DeviantArt.com) is a website that is even more niche than Etsy. The focus of DeviantArt is display and sell artwork. If you are especially artistically inclined, you may consider selling your artwork. DeviantArt operates much like a social media platform with all of the common functions of a website like Instagram or Facebook. Customizing your profile, commenting, liking and sharing are just a few of the core mechanics this website operates on. The ability to sell your artwork was added later and has seen a huge amount of success bring many rising artists to the forefront of the public eye. DeviantArt assumes the costs of printing and shipping the artwork itself and so they take a much higher percentage of a sale. In fact their sales model looks not at what they take from each sale, but how much they give to the artist. Generally DeviantArt pays the artist %20 of sale price when their art is sold by default and offers ‘Core Members’ the option to set their own price and royalty fees. Selling artwork is not an easy field to break into but the possibility is always there for it to be a viable income for talented artists.

- 7. CROWDFUNDINGDo you have an idea for a product but you aren’t sure if it is worth investing in? Crowdfunding websites can be a great option for you. They can allow you to setup a ‘campaign’ and offer the product to the public for presale, in return they will get a perk or some kind of benefit for preordering and paying in advance. This allows you to find out if the demand for your product is there. So if you want to design a new type of phone case that allows you to mount your phone to your handlebars, you can set a goal of $20,000 and offer different tiers for people to buy in at. If your goal of $20,000 in preorders is reached in an allotted amount of time, usually 30 days, than that money becomes yours and you can then fund your product. Any incentives must still be provided to those who invested in your campaign. However, if your goal is not reached, their money is returned at no penalty to you.A) KickstarterKickstarter (Kickstarter.com) is the most popular of the crowdfunding websites and funds half a billion dollars towards successful campaigns each year. If your considering starting a Kickstarter campaign some of the things you have to have include a solid product idea and an intro video with good production quality. Creating a crowdfunding campaign is not a guaranteed success and there is a high chance you will not get a return on any investment in the campaign. However, that is the point. You are taking very little financial risk to find out whether a product will be successful. If it does not reach its goal, there is no harm done and you learn valuable information from the experience. If it is successful, you have everything you have all the funding you need to get your own business started.
B) IndiegogoIndiegogo (www.Indiegogo.com) is another platform for crowdfunding, it very similar to Kickstarter. The main difference between Indiegogo and Kickstarter is they way they handle money. Kickstarter only releases the funds once the goal is met, and Indiegogo offers the option to receive them as they come or at the end of the campaign.
C) Patreon
Patreon (www.Patreon.com) is similar to Indiegogo but it is a way for fans to pay monthly subscriptions for artists and creators who are already producing their work. For example, an independent comic book writer can release a new comic book each month and earn enough to make a living from patreon supporters. This is an especially viable option for those creators who already have a following and fan base.

8. CONTENT CREATOR
An increasingly popular profession in the online world is content creation. This encompasses everything from creating youtube videos to streaming gameplay on websites like http://www.Twitch.tv. This involves creating entertaining videos, editing them and uploading them to your channel. This is the only method out of the five in this book that does not require a person to be at least 18 year old. Both YouTube and Twitch allow children as young as 13 years old to make accounts as long as they have permission from their legal guardians. There are an infinite variety of topics from politics to tutorials, vlogs and gameplay guides, there is something for everyone on http://www.YouTube.com. The primary revenue model for content creation is not through charging to watch your videos rather it is from advertising revenue. There are billions of ad dollars paid to content creators each year. Everyday hundreds of new channels are rising to popularity like ‘PewDiePie’, a Swedish internet personality who makes millions of dollars uploading gameplay videos to his YouTube channel. More people now watch online video than television as it offers free content on demand where ever you have access to an internet connection.
A) YouTube
YouTube is by far the most popular of all the online video platforms. It is free to make your own channel and it costs nothing to upload your content and monetize it. To create your own videos, you will need a video editing software like Adobe Premiere (www.Adobe.com) or Final Cut (www.Apple.com/final-cut-pro). You can purchase these programs for several hundred dollars or you can use the full versions on a monthly subscription basis. Finding a topic you are passionate about or an area of expertise is the best place to start. Some people create tutorial videos for creative processes like animation or craftsmanship. Others find obscure areas of appeal such as the ‘Hydraulic Press’ channel where only videos of various objects being compressed by a hydraulic press are uploaded and often gain millions of views. Or if you have a talent for video games you may consider doing game guides or playthrough videos with commentary that make for great entertainment. Often people watch these videos for help beating a certain boss, or who cannot afford to buy the game themselves. Once you have started your YouTube channel it is only a matter of creating a ‘Google AdWords’ (www.AdWords.Google.com) account to monetize your video and begin making ad revenue. Google AdWords will pay a small fee per ad that is watched and this can add up to big money when your videos start to gain more views. Recently youtube has added ‘Youtube Gaming’ (www.Gaming.YouTube.com), a live streaming version of YouTube where users can watch their favorite content creators stream their gameplay live instead of in recorded video. Revenue in this model comes from paid monthly subscriptions and donations.

B) Twitch
Rising in popularity in recent years, http://www.Twitch.tv has become the go to website for video game content. It offers a live streaming video platform where individual channels broadcast live gameplay. Viewers can chat with each other and the broadcaster while they view the stream and support them by subscribing to their channel for a few dollars a month. A subscription is not required to view the streams and a large portion of a broadcasters income comes from donations from viewers. If you have a good personality and don’t mind being in the public eye, being a live streamer on Twitch could be a great job for you. Of course you will need a good computer to play the games on and broadcasting will add additional demands to your machine. It costs nothing to sign up with twitch and get your channel started. Find a game you are passionate about or become a variety streamer that streams many games. Interact with your viewers and eventually your viewership will grow to the point where Twitch will partner you and give you your own official subscription button. A channels success does not come overnight, it takes many months and sometimes years to build up a viewership. Twitch is not limited to gaming, there are also cooking, creative and ‘irl’ sections where broadcasters can offer cooking shows and stream their artistic processes directly to viewers. If you’re an artist for example, there are many people who might find watching you work enjoyable. Consider creating a Twitch channel and live streaming while you cook or paint. Not all people who try to become streamers will be successful, there is an element of luck involved as to whether people find you entertaining but you won’t know unless you give it a try!

9. GETTING TO WORK
Now that you have a computer, an internet connection and an idea of what type of work you will pursue it is time to get started. Being successful is entirely up to you, no one will be over your shoulder telling you to get to work. You must be disciplined. Waking up at the same time each day, getting dressed as if your going to the office and taking care of yourself is essential to keeping a positive and diligent mindset. Your work area should be clean and organized. If your environment is cluttered and messy than your mind will be cluttered too. Keep a checklist posted on your wall with your goals for each day. It is also helpful to set longer term goals for yourself and write them down. Keeping your longer term goals somewhere visible will also help remind you and give you a way to track your progress. Have a clear picture of what you want to achieve, otherwise it is easy to lose sight of the big picture and because beaten down with frustration when things don’t seem to be going your way. There are many forums and online communities dedicated to the various ways of earning income mentioned in this book. Seeking out other like minded people will help you build a support system and act as a resource when you need help from people who understand what you are doing. Do not underestimate the value of a good support system. Identify someone who is doing what you want to do and is successful. Model your own approach after theirs and use their success as a blueprint. Approach your work with a positive mindset and go after your goals with drive and determination and success will follow.
